Booking your practical driving test is an exciting milestone — but choosing the right time to take your test is just as important as booking the appointment itself.
At Driving Marvel, we help our learners prepare properly for their practical driving test, developing the skills, confidence and independent driving ability needed to drive safely — not simply to pass a test.
When your instructor believes you are approaching test standard, we will help you understand what you need to work on and when the time is right to book.
Book Your Practical Driving Test
Once you have passed your car theory test, you can book your practical driving test through the official GOV.UK service.
Important: from 12 May 2026, learners must book and manage their own practical car driving test. Your driving instructor cannot book, change or cancel the test on your behalf.
You will need
- Your driving licence number
- Your theory test pass details
- A debit or credit card
- Your driving instructor’s personal reference number, if you want to check their availability
You can book a car practical test up to 24 weeks in advance.

Readiness
When Should You Book Your Driving Test?
There is no minimum number of driving lessons required. What matters is whether you can consistently demonstrate the required standard of safe and independent driving.
Vehicle control
Can you control the car smoothly and confidently in different situations?
Observation
Are you consistently seeing and responding to developing hazards?
Planning
Can you plan ahead and make appropriate decisions?
Junctions & roundabouts
Can you approach and negotiate different types of junction safely and independently?
Manoeuvres
Can you complete the required manoeuvres safely, accurately and under control?
Independent driving
Can you follow directions, road signs or a sat-nav route without constant instruction?
Speed & progress
Can you make appropriate progress while remaining within safe and legal limits?
Decision making
Can you make safe decisions without relying on your instructor?
Are You Ready to Pass?
Before booking your test, ask yourself:
- Can I drive safely without my instructor helping me?
- Can I deal with unfamiliar roads and situations?
- Can I make decisions independently?
- Can I recognise hazards early and respond appropriately?
- Can I maintain good observation throughout a complete lesson?
- Can I consistently drive to the required standard rather than only occasionally?
If the answer is yes, you may be approaching test standard. Your instructor will help you assess your readiness and identify any areas that need more practice.

What Happens During the Practical Driving Test?
The practical car driving test is designed to assess whether you can drive safely and independently in different road and traffic conditions.
The test includes elements such as
- An eyesight check
- Vehicle safety questions
- General driving
- Independent driving
- A reversing exercise
- Pulling up on the right and reversing
- A controlled stop in some tests
The driving test includes 35–40 minutes of driving, including the independent driving section.
The purpose of the test is to establish that you are a competent and considerate driver who can drive safely without being a danger to yourself or other road users.

Practical Test Day Checklist
Before leaving for your test, make sure you have:
- Your driving licence
- Your test appointment details
- A suitable, roadworthy test vehicle
- Appropriate insurance
- Your glasses or contact lenses, if required for driving
- Enough time to arrive without rushing
Your test vehicle must meet DVSA requirements. If you use your own car, it must meet specific requirements, including being roadworthy and having appropriate equipment for the examiner.
If you are taking your test in a Driving Marvel vehicle, speak to your instructor beforehand about the arrangements for your test day.
What If You Do Not Pass?
Not passing your first test does not mean you are a bad driver. A test result can help identify areas that need further development.
After your test, your result will show the faults recorded by the examiner. You should discuss the result with your instructor so you can identify what needs to improve before taking another test.
