Qualifying
What Is the ADI Qualification?
To charge for car driving instruction in Great Britain you must become an Approved Driving Instructor. The qualification process consists of three main tests.

Part 1 — Theory & hazard perception
Assesses your knowledge of driving theory and your ability to identify developing hazards. The current Part 1 test combines multiple-choice questions and hazard perception.

Part 2 — Driving ability
Assesses your standard of driving and your ability to demonstrate a high level of safe driving.

Part 3 — Instructional ability
Where you demonstrate your ability to provide effective driving instruction. It is not enough to be a good driver: you need to be able to teach another person to become a good driver.

Important: Understand the Commitment
Becoming a driving instructor is a professional career — and it requires commitment. You will need to meet the eligibility requirements, complete the application process and pass the required ADI tests.
For Great Britain, current GOV.UK eligibility includes being at least 21, having held a full driving licence for at least three years, and meeting the relevant driving and suitability requirements. A new DBS check is also required for the application.
After passing Part 1, you must complete the remaining qualification process within the relevant time limit. GOV.UK currently states that you have two years from passing Part 1 to qualify as an ADI.
